How do I get ready for my first exam?
Read, Re-write, and re-read your re-writes!!! The more you look over your material, with a thought for understanding Biology as a whole, the better you will do. Look up vocabulary. Read Chapters 1, 2, and 3. Look over the Powerpoints. Look over your notes. If you don't spend at least two hours studying for every one hour we have spent in class, you may be behind!!!
Taking the actual exam - Your exam will be available Sept 8 at 9:00am to Sept 9 4:00 pm in the Computer Testing Center. This is the same place you take your lab quizzes. Schrank North 152. So, your exam will be available all day Thursday, and all day Friday, while the CBT is open. THINK ABOUT THIS! What if there is a wait? What if 200 students all show up to take the exam at 3:30pm on Friday? You MUST have a zipcard. No excuses! What if you need 2 hours to take the test? What if you need accommodations? You should plan to spend AT LEAST an hour taking the exam - there are 60 questions. Read the questions carefully and completely and do "process of elimination." You cannot take notes or cheat sheets or use your phone during the exam. You also will not receive a grade for your exam until I have had a chance to review ALL the exams - most likely Monday after the exam.
What if I miss my exam??? There are only three ways to take a make up exam. You must have approached me ahead of time with a military or University-approved sporting event. Or, you must show me an official doctor's note. UNIVERSITY APPROVED EXCUSES ONLY. The following excuses (or ones like them) will result in ZERO POINTS for the exam - My dog died. I got a flat tire. I forgot. I missed the CBT hours. I forgot my zipcard. I'm an idiot. LIFE HAPPENS GUYS, but in the case of exams, I only take University approved excuses. PLEASE don't test me on this. I will be a massive witch and give you a zero. Sorry.
Will this test be hard? Yes. Flat out, students have always told me the exam is hard. They are not just definition questions. They are thinking questions. You need to have a working knowledge of biology, and of the chapters to do well. And since exams count for HALF your total grade of the course - be aware, study hard, take this seriously, and no goofing around!
